What will I learn in French?

At Advanced Level, you will be trained to write essays in French, work out written comprehensions, analyse non-literary texts, write essays in either English, Maltese, or French, about 2 prescribed literature books and answer questions in French on an extract from Molière’s comedy Le malade imaginaire. Besides getting the opportunity to improve their grammar, you will also be trained to read and hold conversations in French. The course will also help you to increase your knowledge of French culture.  

At Intermediate Level, you will have a written paper which will include a language essay, a summary, questions about culture topics and a literature essay which you may write in either English, Maltese, or French. In the oral exam, you will have to read a short text and answer 2 questions about it.  You will also have a topic for free conversation. 

At SEC/O Level you will be given the opportunity to improve your listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills.

How will I benefit from studying French?

At Advanced and Intermediate level, you will be given the opportunity to consolidate and increase their knowledge of the French language and culture. You will be trained to be able to understand and communicate confidently and accurately in both the spoken and the written forms of the language. You will be encouraged to debate and discuss in French, and you will also be introduced to French literature.  If you already have some knowledge of French, you may study French at SEC/O Level and you will be given the opportunity to improve your listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills.  

France is one of the world’s largest economies and knowing French opens opportunities to study at renowned French universities and business schools. Being able to speak French and English offers an advantage on the international job market.  It is also very useful for a career in diplomacy and international relations as well as archival studies.  French is spoken by more than 300 million people on the five continents. French is an official language and a working language of the United Nations, the European Union, UNESCO, NATO, the International Olympic Committee, the International Red Cross and international courts.
