What will I learn in History?

The subject consists of various topics covering Maltese and International History roughly from 1789 to 2004. 

The Advanced Level course covers Maltese, International and Mediterranean History from 1789 to 2004.  In the MATSEC exam, the 3 papers are set in English and you are expected to answer in English.  

The Intermediate Level course covers Maltese and European History from 1789 to 1921.  In the MATSEC exam, the paper is set in English and you are expected to answer in English. 

How will I benefit from studying History?

The study of History will help you acquire the invaluable skills like chronological thinking, comprehension, analysis, interpretation, research skills, empathy, and decision making. History is a required subject for students taking a BA History Course at the University of Malta and for those who intend to pursue a teaching career by reading for a Masters in Teaching & Learning.  It is also very useful for students who wish to study European Studies, International Relations, Languages and Literature,  Law,  Politics,  Sociology, and Tourism.      

Are there any special considerations?

  • The course layout ensures that the examination syllabi targets are achieved through various projects, class presentations, discussions, research, talks and excursions to historical places. 
  • Students are also given the opportunity to carry out a placement programme at the National Archives. 
  • A good knowledge of English is recommended
